CRUSHO - TRAFFIC JAM EP - Q-TAPE RECORDS FEAT MARYLIN DAVID + BLACK JOY remix JUNE 04
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
With an open minded taste in music, CRUSHO does not like to be catalogued or boxed in a particular type of music and his new “TRAFFICJAM EP” proves it.
For this great piece of future funk music, he did all the production first and then collaborated with detroit soul singer MARYLIN DAVID for a rough disco track “Someone to love”. The two other tracks of the EP are more in a laidback-funk way with bouncy beats, sweet fender rhodes and heavy D6 clavinet. Check out the hypnotic electro mix of “Someone to love” by parisian producer BLACKJOY (Project recordings / Yellow productions).

Behind PORKS WATCH hides PATCHWORKS Aka Bruno Hovart ... Extracted from his last successfull IMMO EP, here's the demanded extented version of the Millions Toes interlude. A deserved tribute to Candido's thousand fingers man…on the flip, a remix by SYLVESTER OVER.
Ashley Beedle (Various) – “Million Toes Interlude is a killer. Can they do a longer edit?”, Rainer Truby (Truby Trio) – “Love their stuff. Quality all the way through. The Candido lick comes from Thousand Finger Man – I would appreciate a full version! Very nice.”
LTJ Bukem (Good Looking) – “Love this, especially the minimal old school-sounding Million Toes Interlude ..."
Benji B (Deviation/BBC) - "i love this interlude - the candido tune - great"

TOP ROCKING - COSMIC BROADCAST EP - Q-TAPE RECORDS  APRIL 04
After having collaborated with TY, Easy and April King on their first EP "Dataswitchbox EP" from which the track "The real new world" was one of Gilles Peterson's favorites of 2003 (3 consecutives weeks on Worldwide radio show and included on the compilation "Trust the Dj") and followed by the 7" "Don't sleep" with the english Hip Hop crew Aspects, Top Rocking is back with this new EP.
A new ep on which live instruments such as vibraphones, flutes, percussions, drums, brass and double bass play alongside samples and vocales for a result that reminds us of the duos influences. From cosmic jazz to Roy Ayers through to abstract hip hop......
April King is back on 2 tracks, "B4" and "Eternity is Now", and for the first time on vinyl Mr Adah a shining new rapper from new york, on "I Need My Raincoat Now".
Top Rocking also delivers the instrumental "The Module" with it's resolutely abstract ambience, along with the unclassable interlude "Setting Charts" and finishes on an outro with a Lee Dorsey sample.
The Duo have matured in production and have once again surrounded themselves with excellent musicians who have added form to their universe!
The cover artwork is a collboration between the talentuous Youri Smurf (who's making all q-tape graphism) and french well known Grafitti artist AlexOne.

Richard Dorfmeister (Tosca/G-Stone) – “IMMO is a nice Afro mover!”
LTJ Bukem (Good Looking) – “Love this, especially the minimal old school-sounding Million Toes Interlude and Corn Bread…like the two mixes of Corn Bread on the other side as well. Great 12inch.”
Atjazz (Mantis) – “This is bad ass – I’m off to Poland for two gigs and it’s in the bag for both. Million Toes Interlude is amazing and the Crusho remix of Corn Bread bites my ass!” (Will Chart)
Jimpster (Freerange) – “I’m blown away by this release, right up my street! Deep and soulful house music at its very best. All tracks are spot-on but I’m gonna be spinning the Sylvester mix I reckon. Really warm and dead funky, too.”
Simone Serritella (Arision) – “Love it! Nice Rhodes going on throughout Corn Bread.”
Mr Scruff (Keep It Unreal) – “Pleasant and relaxing, a bit borderline polite for me but I will give it a spin.” (Charted #15)
Rainer Truby (Truby Trio) – “Love their stuff. Quality all the way through. The Candido lick comes from Thousand Finger Man – I would appreciate a full version! Very nice.” (Charted Top 10)
Ashley Beedle (Various) – “Million Toes Interlude is a killer. Can they do a longer edit?”
Pete Herbert (Cuica/Optimo) – “Great EP. Love every track. B2 working well on the dancefloor.”
Nik Weston (Various) – “Great label! Lovely stuff – nicely does it.” (Will Chart)
Tom Churchill (Emoticon) – “I really like this – a cool fusion of afrobeat, disco, house and broken beat but sounding better than that comes across on paper. Been listening to it a lot over the weekend – a very solid EP from start to finish.”
Laurent Garnier (F-Com) - "Brilliant deepness - really love this record - will playlist it on radio and give it all the support it deserves in clubs."
Rob Da Bank (Radio 1) - "Lovely Afro foolishness - one for the ladies."
Zak Frost (deepblue) - "Very nice downtempo vibes - perfect for chilling to at home or playing on radio."
Jon Kennedy (Grand Central) - "House vibes don't usually move me, but this is inoffensive and lush." (Charted #20)
Dan Bean (Passion FM) - "Liked this very much, from the strong grooves of the original IMMO though to the beautiful and tantalising Million Toes Interlude. Look forward to hearing more from this producer."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This third release for Q-Tape sees two tracks that are aimed fairly and squarely at the dancefloor: the afro-flavoured IMMO and the deeper, dubbier Corn Bread. The remixes come courtesy of Crusho (returning the favour after Patchworks remixed a track from his Frontline EP) and Sylvester Over. An interlude, which makes clever use of one of Candido’s disco smashes (can you guess which one?), also features…

"Dataswitchbox EP" is the first Ep from TOP ROCKING, fruit of a collaboration between Clémens Hourrière ( Milano / Q-Tape ) and Jonathan Fitoussi (Styxprodoïk ).
After several respective solo/groupe releases (playlisted amongst others by Dj Krush) our two accomplices get together to bring us their vision of abstract Hip Hop.
For the occasion they have surrounded themselves with such artists as the rapper TY (big dada), to the very rhetoric Easy and also the american singer April King, who swings between rap and spoken word.
Their instrumentals stand out through the presence of numerous musicians already seen on precedent releases from the label : clavinet by Victor Lesmanes, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Piano by Patrice Canaux, Sctraches by Sébastien Rosat, Horn section ...

Jean Louis Moisset appears on alto sax, and the ep also contains the first wurlitzer solo effort by Victor Lemafne …. plus a wonderfull remix by patchworks featuring the MJA's pianist Benjamin Devigne.

On q-tape records, patchworks uncovers another dimension to his talents.A new approach to jazz, symbiosis of electronic music and played instruments.
Jazzy break-beats and fender rhodes are amongst the ingredients used to create a musical sound rich in influences. The atmospheres are suave and give a real identity to his productions.

** about q-tape records **

QUALITY WITH A CAPITAL Q - beyondjazz.net

It's summer in Paris! A fresh sound is spreading out hailing from the cradle of worldwide respected artists such as DJ Cam, La Funk Mob or even Laurent Garnier, it's the sound of label boss Matthieu Moreau and his two friends Clémens and Sébastian. Situated in the heart of France, Paris, they've managed to get a label running and after five releases up to present q-tape crew can say hearts of Rainer Trüby, Nik Weston, GILLES PETERSON, Michael Rutten, Quantic and so many other music devotees are all conquered! With good reason, as they're sound is quite distinctive and diverse! Where Crusho and Patchworks (who's releasing an album featuring Amp Fiddler on Chicago's label Still Music) frequently dip there toe in the pool called nu-jazz, Top Rocking's sound tends more to be mainly hip hop influenced. Together with Mattieu we take a look back upon q-tape's 2 years of evolution.

"Clémens and Sébastien are both friends of mine, we met years ago and decided to found q-tape as we are all in music since a long time. Clémens had his own studio at home and Sébastien started playing music with friends from our crew, that's pretty much how it all started..."

In the knowledge that label boss Matthieu Moreau only is twenty three years old up to present - Clémens (23) and Sébastien (25), it's really stunning to see what work they've achieved so far. So does the future looks bright in Paris? "The scene in Paris is still good but people are getting older! As result of that there aren't many new labels nowadays. You can say we are part of the youngest guys around."

Lyon based Bruno Hovart - also known as Cinnamone (Superhuit Records) and Metropolitan Jazz Afair, MJA, (Le Maquis) - is the face behind Patchworks. A new approach to jazz, symbiosis of electronic music and played instruments. Jazzy break-beats and Fender Rhodes are amongst the ingredients used to create a musical sound rich in influences. In July 2002 his first solo maxi 'Velvet and Dust' was released on Q-Tape. A very versatile and fresh sounding EP, which nicely balances between super laidback jazz grooves ('I Guess You Always Knew'), up tempo Brazil stuff ('Batucamore') with sweeping organs and rolling percussion and consequently the floor piece of the quintet, or the Rhodes driven 'Summertime'. A half year later he manages to surprise all of us again with this little 7", delicious afro funk/jazz track ('C.O.C.A.N.'), again lovely synths coupled with those Hammond stabs playing the leading part, highly recommend release which features a King Tubby dub homage on the flip. ('Steve McQueen'). Cause of its "highly recommended"-stamp it's very hard to find; Mattieu Moreau: "The c.o.c.a.n 7 inch was repressed in April this year, and had great success! Besides we've also repressed the first patchworks 's EP which was sold out in 1 week !!! same for the Crusho…

"The first Q-Tape release however, isn't emerged from Bruno's artistic mastermind. It is Milano's 'Superbock EP' that has the honour to be the first release ever on this meanwhile critically acclaimed label! It saw the light of day in September 2001 and was introduced to the press with 'Where the programming of beats comes to sublimate melodies, played largely on true instruments, and centred around Fender Rhodes.' - and they had it right, from there on Q-Tape caused quite a stir in Paris.

October 2002 was the month where Crusho's 'Frontline EP' saw the light of day. Crusho, born Sebastien Rosat (member of Milano), first solo effort contains five tracks of afro brazilian rythms mixed with horns and vintage keyboards. The EP begins with a high tempo track ('Frontline'), up front percussions aimed at the dancefloor, whereas the other tracks are on a more downtempo/bossa/jazz vibe.Jean Louis Moisset appears on alto sax, and the EP also contains the first Wurlitzer solo effort by Victor LEMASNES plus a wonderful remix by patchworks featuring the MJA's pianist Benjamin Devigne.
'Dataswitchbox EP' is the fruit of a collaboration between Clémens Hourrière (member of Milano) and Jonathan Fitoussi (Styxprodoïk ) under the guise of Top Rocking. After several respective solo and group releases our two accomplices get together to bring us their vision of abstract Hip Hop. For the occasion they have surrounded themselves with such artists as the rapper TY (big dada), to the very rhetoric Easy and also the American singer April King, who swings between rap and spoken word. Their instrumentals stand out through the presence of numerous musicians already seen on precedent releases from the label : clarinet by Victor Lesmanes, Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Piano by Patrice Canaux, Sctraches by Sébastien Rosat, Horn section. Top Rocking should be working on an album next year.

And then there's Tanzmuzik "our monthly radio show on Radio Campus Paris (shows are hosted on q-tape site or live on radio campus website). We try to present all our musical tastes, from funk to rock, dub to soul, hip hop, electronic ... it's free! And we invite friends of us to present some of their past or present gems." - states Mattieu.

KINDAMUZIK.NET

At Beats we're always looking for the freshest winds blowing through the unpredictable landscape of today's electronica. And the warmest and most fertile winds these days are blowing from those lands where electronica joins hands with elements culled from jazz, hiphop, soul, funk and reggae.

Labels like Compost, Straight Ahead, Sonar Kollektiv and Tru Thoughts are the best known examples from recent years. And the Parisian Q-Tape (with the
Q standing for Quality) is another one of those labels that up till now succeeds effortlessly in keeping its output interesting, varied and contemporary. Although label honcho Mathieu Moreau doesn't really deny the kinship to the dancefloor jazz brigade, he nevertheless points out that the Q-Tape releases are not produced with the dancefloor in mind. He feels more influenced by French pioneers like Dj Cam and La Funk Mob.

While the first Q-tape release (Milano's Superbock Ep) passed by rather anonymously, then their second release already made it to the lists of Joe Claussell, Rainer Trüby, Darren Laws and Nick Weston. Understandably, 'cause the brainchild of Bruno Hovart hits you with an exciting brew of batacuda, live jazz and a bluesy atmosphere. And he covers Gershwin's Summertime in a truly eautiful nu-jazz version. The man plays all the instruments himself (guitar, bass, Rhides and Wurlitzer) and that fits in Mathieu's philosophy. 'Of course it
always starts out as electronic music, but we think we shouldn't leave it at that. Every record is an adventure of its own. Not just because the different combinations of personnel results in other perspectives. The label sound is developing itself very intuitively. Not only because you're making music with a unch of friends, but because when we need this or that particular sound you have to go looking for different musicians to fill in the records'.

And you notice hat approach just listening to the sheer variety of the label sound. While Crusho (the solo project of Milano's Sebastien Rosat) and Patchworks float along expertly with the powerful nu-jazz movement, Top Rocking (Milano's Clemence Hourriere with Jonathan Fitoussi) is moving all the way into hiphop territory (with as guest musicians for example Big Dada's Ty). And the already mentioned Patchworks comes along with a good old-fashioned 7-inch that cuts the pie in two
between afrobeat and dub. But the packaging is also very well attended to.

The artwork of El Gringo, just like the label's musical output, puts a lot of stress on the importance of tradition next to the use of the newest techniques. Le Gringo and Bruno 'Patchworks' Hovart are actually both members of the Institut De La Sonologie, that with fitting irony and tongue-in-cheek seeks to shock the bourgeoisie and in that manner tries to follow the footsteps of the Futurists.

All those perspectives are joined together on the monthly Soirées Q-Tape, that Mathieu organizes with his label mates and friends. Manu Boubli, the boss of the stylish Comet label (with whom they incidentally share an office), too, accompanies them on these musical nights out. 'On those occasions too everything that oozes quality is permitted. We embrace afro, soul, funk, hiphop and the newest dance music. But if we're into a rock record and it has the right groove, then why shouldn't we play it?' But it's not only parties because the boys already have a conquered a weekly radiospot.

And there are plans too for a real sound system, where the live approach of the guys could be combined with dj's, mc's and singers. Of course after a mere 4 releases, a lot of it is still future music, but if it were up to Mathieu it cannot go fast enough. Anyway, this year will see at least three new releases. Patchworks is expected with a new 12" in September, while Top rocking will be releasing two new records (in July and October). 'For the moment we will be looking out for the reactions on the upcoming releases. Up till now business is going well. We even had to employ an assistant already to take care of daily business. More important at the moment is that Q-tape creates an identity of its own. After that the musical family can be extended. But what everybody craves for, of course, is appreciation from abroad'. And that, in spite of the support of Claussell, Trüby and Reinboth, remains to be seen. But that this should pose no problems either, is made clear a few days later, when Q-tape sends me a mailing, announcing that Bruno Hovart's Patchworks will be recording for Chicago's Still label. For the remix he can count on the skills of no-one less than Amp Fiddler (notorious for having worked with Carl Craig, Recloose and The Detroit Experiment).

And the last months we already saw Q-Tape tracks on Parisian lounge compilations in the style of Saint-Germain Café. And if you take into account the way these compilations change hands these days, then we have no problem putting all our money on Q-Tape. We will be keeping you informed.

Clark Magazine
